Bootstrapping via Ring Switching without Slot Recovery

Abstract

Ring switching provides a natural way to reduce bootstrapping cost in ring-based fully homomorphic encryption by moving computation to smaller rings. For SIMD-packed ciphertexts, however, ring switching changes the slot layout, so conventional approaches apply slot recovery to ensure correct computation on the original slot values, consuming capacity and requiring synchronization across ciphertexts. In this paper, we show that slot recovery is not indispensable: CKKS and BGV/BFV bootstrapping can proceed directly after ring switching. We further prove that a continuous slotwise function admits independent leaf evaluation for unrestricted real CKKS inputs exactly when it is affine. Our construction provides an extra layer of parallelism, enables cheaper arithmetic in smaller rings, and can further simplify bootstrapping by exploiting the leaf structure. For CKKS with \(N=2^{17}\) and \(n=2^{16}\), we achieve a \(1.13\times\) serial speedup; evaluating two leaves in parallel yields a \(2.03\times\)--\(2.18\times\) speedup and \(2.00\times\)--\(2.14\times\) the throughput of direct bootstrapping. For BGV with \(p=65537\), \(N=2^{16}\), and \(n=2^{15}\), we achieve a \(1.30\times\) serial speedup and \(1.63\times\) the throughput of direct general bootstrapping under matched transform settings, while reducing key-generation time by \(50.6\%\) and server-key size by \(48.6\%\).
